Salt Lake ragging: Cops ask for CCTV footage from engg college
Kolkata: Probing into the alleged incident of ragging and assault of a first-year student of Techno India's main campus in Salt Lake Sector V, cops have requisitioned CCTV footage of the campus gate and footage from CK-CL ground in Salt Lake where the majority of the assault took place.Cops are also interrogating the arrested youth, Ashmit Shaw, who led the assault and are trying to find the whereabouts of two other FIR-named accused — Rohit Singh and Aditya Singh — and three others whom the victim couldn't name."The two youths are still absconding and we are looking for them," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar City Police. On Monday, TOI reported how a first-year diploma engineering student, Santosh Kumar, was assaulted, burnt with cigarettes, and threatened with death by a group of fellow students if he didn't pay Rs 1 lakh to them. The incident happened on April 16 and the student lodged a complaint on April 17, following which Ashmit was arrested.Kumar, a student from Bokaro in Jharkhand — who is currently staying alone in Kestopur for his studies — said he was being tortured by these youths for over a year and had even missed a year of studies because of them. On April 16, he had returned to the campus to take an exam when he was intercepted near Gate 6 of the campus by a group of students, including two FIR-named second-year BCA students."I was whipped 20 times with a belt and they inflicted burns on my right bicep using cigarettes," he told TOI. He said he was further beaten up mercilessly by 8-9 youths at CK-CL ground in Salt Lake outside the campus where the accused students allegedly also transferred Rs 430 from his UPI account to their bank account and bought cigarettes with the same. They allegedly burnt his hand with the same cigarettes.Techno India University registrar Sujoy Biswas said they are yet to receive a complaint regarding the same from the student."No such complaints have been reported to the authorities yet. Although we have both anti-ragging and disciplinary committees, neither has received any formal grievance," he said.University officials said the location mentioned by the student where the assault took place was outside the college premises. "The cops didn't contact us, but we called them up first to know the matter. If we receive a formal complaint from the student, we will take immediate action, as we maintain a policy of zero tolerance against ragging," an official said.
