DURGAPUR: The condition of the first-year student of Bankura Mallabhum Institute of Technology (MIT) who was allegedly pushed off the hostel building rooftop by seniors following ragging on Thursday night is said to be still critical.
On Saturday, Probir Mukherjee, CEO of The Mission Hospital in Durgapur, said, "Ujjwal Anand is in the ICU. He has shown no signs of recovery and is still in an unconscious state."
A native of Dehri On Sone in Bihar, Ujjwal had allegedly been tortured physically and mentally by third-year student Gourav Kumar and his friends to avenge the reported thrashing of Gourav's brother Dipak Kumar by the victim two days ago.

Ujjwal was hospitalised after the incident and he was said to be depressed because of the harassment. While Ujjwal's friends claimed he jumped off the third floor, the victim's family alleged he was pushed.
College authorities on Friday had suspended Gourav and Anish Kumar Sharma and even asked the former to vacate the hostel.
However, the victim's family is yet to register an FIR with regard to their allegation. Ujjwal's father Bimal Kumar said, "A few of our relatives have arrived here from Bihar... but since the condition of my son is still very critical, none of us has stepped out of the hospital."
A farmer, Kumar isn't sure how he will manage the hospital costs. "At the time of admission, the college had deposited Rs 35,000, but I don't know how I will arrange the rest of the money," he added.

In another ragging incident, reported from Central Engineering Institute in Durgapur on November 16, three final-year girls have been suspended. A first-year Bengali girl had slit her wrist in an attempt to commit suicide after Debalina Halder, Arpita Dey and Sibhoshree Halder allegedly clicked her in the nude and posted her pictures on the internet. Suspending the students, the college also reportedly directed them to stay away from the hostel until the probe report, expected on November 25, proved them innocent.
The victim was discharged from hospital on Friday night.
Sankha Biswas, officer incharge of Durgapur police station, told TOI that neither the college nor the victim's family had lodged an FIR.
"The accused surely ragged her and, therefore, they have been suspended. However, there is no information to corroborate the claim that the victim was clicked inappropriately and her pictures posted on the net, leading to the suicide bid," said a college official.
Even as the Supreme Court has made it mandatory for police complaints to be lodged in ragging incidents, in both the cases, the colleges failed to lodge FIRs.
