KOLKATA: The state environment department on Monday asked East Midnapore superintendent of police K Jayraman to take stern action against those who murdered primary school teacher Monmohan Kuiti for protesting against the use of loudspeakers beyond permissible time.
The department has also come up with a detailed status report of deaths for protesting against violation of environmental norms.
The West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) is very concerned about the increase in such incidents, the department's missive to the SP states.
A senior WBPCB officer has been directed to contact the Durgachak police station under whose jurisdiction Saturday's incident happened. He will also visit the victim's house and submit a report to the WBPCB for further action.
"We found that five such deaths have taken place in the state. If such incidents increase and the culprits are not brought to book, people will stop coming forward to protest against environmental violations," said department chief law officer Biswajit Mukherjee.
Dipak Das, a resident of Sheoraphully, and Purulia resident Subodh Mahato were killed for protesting against the use of banned firecrackers.
While the accused in Dipak Das murder case were later acquitted, Mahato's case is still pending.
Last year, Bakul Adhikary and Pradip Roy were murdered for the same reason. Tapan Dutta, a resident of Howrah, was killed for protesting against destruction of water bodies.
