KOLKATA:
Durga Puja sure is a time for creative expression. While some artists showcase their oeuvre for community pujas, others choose to pay tribute to the goddess in their own signature style. And this puja, art is selling as much as clothes and footwear.
Eminent sculptor Tapas Sarkar has curated an exhibition titled Devi', which is a compilation of artwork and sculptures by senior painters and sculptors like Sunil Sil, Gopinath Roy, Somnath Chakraborty, Prabhat Majhi and Pinaki Acharya.
Sarkar himself has fashioned three sculptures of Durga at this show, which is on at the Sculptor Gallery in Jadavpur. "We have been working very hard on this exhibition for the past four months. All the works have been especially crafted for the show," said Sarkar, whose attention to detail is once again evident in the bronze busts adorned with large eyes and long necks. "What's surprising," said the sculptor, "is that we did not think there would be so many patrons at a time when everyone's busy with puja shopping. But people have been buying art too."
