Noted academic, who taught Eng at JU for 4 decades, no more

Kolkata: Sati Chatterjee, a former professor of English literature at Jadavpur University, passed away on Friday at her Lake Gardens residence. The 91-year-old academic was suffering from a lung infection.In 1950, Chatterjee joined Presidency College to study English literature and was a cherished student of professors Subodh Chandra Sengupta and Taraknath Sen. Her father was a member of the Anushilan Samiti. She was married to distinguished academic Bhabatosh Chatterjee.Chatterjee started teaching at Jadavpur University in the 1960s and retired in the late 90s. Among her students were Malini Bhattacharya and Swapan Chakraborty. Her subject was TS Eliot, and while writing a book on TS Eliot, Valerie Eliot personally handed her the poet's unpublished manuscript. Her other works include research on the Rigveda and a detailed compilation called ‘Rabindranather Chithipatra: Nirdeshika'. Shobha Chattopadhyay, one of her students, said that she was working on Tagore's views on nationalism and the theories of nationalism.
