KOLKATA: A week after Jadavpur University engineering student Rounak Saha drowned in the Hooghly, Kolkata Police have started a murder case against one of the four friends who was with Rounak when he fell off the boat. The case was initiated on the basis of a complaint filed by Rounak's parents.
"We have started a case of murder against one of the classmates.
Rounak's parents suspect this boy pushed their son into the water. We have interrogated him several times, but have not arrested him yet," said
Sudip Sarkar, deputy commissioner (port division) of Kolkata Police.
Earlier, Rounak's parents had lodged a complaint of negligence against the boatman. Later, they questioned the role of his friends. On Tuesday, two days after the body was found, they claimed their son was murdered and redrafted their old complaint alleging that one of the four friends was the prime suspect.
Officers of South Port police station said they will organize a reconstruction of the event and take help of forensic experts to ascertain if indeed there was foul play. They will also question the "friend" over the next 48 hours. There is also a possibility that he might be brought face to face with the boatman and the three other friends to ascertain if he is speaking the truth.
"Since there is a specific complaint, we will not take chances. We are waiting for certain forensic reports before we begin recording the statements of a few key witnesses," said an officer.
Rounak's father said he was "happy" that the police had started a murder probe. "I hope they would be able to provide me and my son the justice we deserve," he said.
