BARRACKPORE: Trinamool Congress leader Mukul Roy's son and Bijpur party candidate Subhrangshu Roy was released on bail on Tuesday after spending a night in jail custody. He will have to appear in court on May 15, two days after his electoral fate would have been declared.
Subhrangshu was arrested from a Mamata Banerjee rally at Naihati on Sunday on charges of attacking Election Commission officials on April 12.

He had been in hiding for five days before showing up at Mamata's back-to-back rallies in Gayespur and Naihati. Mamata made it very clear that she would not defend him, announcing at the Gayespur rally that the law would take its course. At Naihati, she did not even acknowledge his presence and left him out while introducing candidates on the stage. Police moved in soon after Mamata left the state and arrested Subhrangshu. He was lodged in a police lock-up for the night and produced in court the next day under tight security.
On Tuesday, too, there was heavy security for Subhrangshu in the court. His defence lawyer, Kalipada Ghosh, appealed for bail but public prosecutor Sunil Kumar Jana opposed it, saying the Subhrangshu had been charged with non-bailable sections like snatching, attacking public property and assaulting EC officials. Besides, he was the prime accused in instigating and leading the gang to attack the EC team, Jana said.
After listening to both arguments, the court granted Subhrangshu interim bail with a bond of Rs 50,000. His bail bond will be cancelled if he commits the same offence within this time period, the court said. After the hearing the Trinamool leader was brought back to Barrackpore sub-jail where it took another two hours to prepare his release papers. He was finally let off at 5:30pm.
