More than 100 undergraduate second- and third-year students from Jadavpur University’s Bengali, Sanskrit and philosophy departments attended the anti-ragging awareness and stress management workshop at the open air theatre on Monday.

KOLKATA: More than 100 undergraduate second- and third-year students from Jadavpur University’s Bengali, Sanskrit and philosophy departments attended the anti-ragging awareness and stress management workshop at the open air theatre on Monday.
It was organised by JU’s Centre of Counselling Services and Studies in Self Development (CCSSS) to focus on mental health of the students as well as change their mindset to stop the ragging culture.

Registrar Snehamanju Basu said, “We are laying more stress on psychological counselling sessions of students as per the UGC guidelines, both on the campus and at the hostels so that it helps students to come to terms with any kind of trauma, anxiety or stress as well as change the mindset of students.”
CCSSS deputy coordinator Samar Kumar Mondal said, “Questionnaires were given to the UG2 and UG3 students so that their stress points could be identified. We categorized it under academics, career, family problems, relationship issues and accordingly students were placed in groups. Each group had a facilitator to conduct the group therapy.”
UG2 Bengali department student Niladri Roy said, “It was a fruitful session as we got to know that stress and ragging are connected.” Another UG2 philosophy student Tina Ghosh said, “Such sessions should take place regularly so that we can share our problems.”
Psychiatric and social worker Mohit Ranadip said, “We need to focus on strengthening life skills, such as enhancement of self esteem, to develop assertiveness.”
