Kolkata: The hunger strike by students at Medical College Hospital Kolkata entered the fourth day on Sunday, a day after the health secretary visited them. The agitating students refused to call off their protest despite the health secretary’s appeal and offering a round of meeting with them on Tuesday. Five students have been on the hunger strike since Thursday demanding student union election.
On Sunday, college officials, including principal Indranil Biswas and the vice-principal, visited the students to check on their health with another round of appeal to call off the protest. Sources said the condition of four students were found to be weak and that they were prepared to render medical help if their condition deteriorates.
Various doctor organisations have pledged support to the agitating students and they will hold a convention on the hospital premises on Monday.
Student unions from institutes like Jadavpur University have shown their solidarity. Filmmaker and actor Koushik Sen on Sunday sent out a videotape supporting the cause of the students.
