Kolkata: The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has started reconstruction of a dilapidated government housing complex in Maniktala.
According to plans, the KMDA will need to demolish four building towers that have become structurally weak and then reconstruct these towers to accommodate the inhabitants who will be shifted elsewhere till the completion of the reconstruction project.
The state urban development minister, Firhad Hakim, on Saturday visited the housing complex in Maniktala along with senior KMDA officials to interact with a section of the residents of the complex who are reluctant to shift.
Besides taking up the rehabilitation issue with the residents, Hakim told KMC councillor Ayan Chakraborty to keep day-to-day contact with the residents till the reconstruction was completed. According to a KMDA source, the state government has decided to reconstruct all four towers in the housing complex which has 232 flats in total.
“We have started piling work of a tower after necessary demolition. Now, we want to expedite both the demolition and the construction work so that the residents get back their flats as soon as possible,” said a KMDA source.
