KOLKATA: The Bengal Special Task Force (STF) has arrested an arms runner in the city who was posing as a saree merchant. Cops said the accused,
Tapan Saha (55), was nabbed from Dum Dum Cantonment railway station.
Saha, a resident of Habra's Manasabari, was found to be carrying two 7mm semi-automatic pistols and two improvised "one-shotter" guns. He had been held with arms before key elections in the state, said STF sources.
A case was registered against him at Dum Dum GRPS.
Police said the accused stayed in close touch with local criminals and gave them arms. Most of these criminals operate in the Habra-Ashoknagar area. A few criminals in Kolkata were also in touch with the accused, claimed sources.
STF sources said Saha was probably planning to sell weapons sourced from Munger to criminals on international borders. The police stated that Saha had been taken into police custody and that his questioning would lead to unearthing of the suppliers of these arms. "While it is too early to say if Saha has any connection with the Sinthee arms haul, we are not ruling out certain links," said an officer.
