Kolkata Rape and Murder Case Live Updates: Victim's parents join doctors' protest

Two vendors - Biplab Singha and Suman Hazra - laundered money for Sandip Ghosh and he took 20% commission on each tender, a CBI officer probing alleged financial irregularities by the arrested ex-principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has said. Singha and Hazra were arrested Monday, along with Ghosh.

Hours before the Supreme Court hears the rape-murder case on Sep 5, the victim's family will be with the protesting doctors at the RG Kar Medical College & Hospital on Wednesday. The deceased PGT doctor's parents told reporters that they wanted to be with the protesting students who - like their own child - have been fighting for justice. "We want to go to RG Kar. My daughter worked and died there. We wish to be with the protesting doctors at that place," the victim's father said.

Trinamool Congress and BJP had a rare, fleeting moment of consensus in Bengal assembly Tuesday when they ensured the unanimous passage of the "Aparajita Bill" that seeks to make rape and other heinous crimes involving sexual assault punishable with death. CM Mamata Banerjee reiterated her solidarity with protesters rallying against the Aug 9 rape-murder of a doctor at RG Kar Hospital, terming the rape as "a national shame".

Under fire over Kolkata doctor rape-murder case, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday hit back at the BJP by citing cases in Unnao and Hathras.

"No one talks about what happened in Unnao, the victim of Hathras did not get justice," she said in state assembly, referring to two high-profile cases of rape and murder that sparked national outrage.

Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government on Tuesday tabled the anti-rape Bill in the assembly which seeks to impose the death penalty on persons convicted of rape, if their actions result in the victim's death or cause her to become vegetative, and a life sentence for the rape and gang rape case.

• The Special Investigation Team (SIT) — that was formed by Lalbazar to probe the Aug 14 RG Kar vandalism — will now also investigate the cases related to the Aug 27 Nabanna March. The 15-member SIT will be expanded to include members from south and central divisions
• A total of 18 FIRs have been lodged in both the incidents. So far, 50 persons have been arrested in the RG Kar vandalism and over 110 others examined. As many as 151 were held for vandalism duringNabanna March.
• The cops are likely to file a report on the RG Kar vandalism in court on Sept 5. Raids were on to nab a few who have had“ultraleft’ links .
