Idol ridiculed, protest in Darjeeling
The hill town erupted in anger over a radio jockey’s comment about the Gorkha community a day after Prashant Tamang was crowned the Indian Idol.
The RJ’s derogatory words on a popular FM channel in Delhi on September 24 night led to mass protests in Darjeeling. People burnt an effigy of the RJ and Bimal Gurung, a local councillor, led a group of protesters with black flags to the district magistrate’s office.
Shops in Darjeeling shut down after posters condemning the remarks were put up in Chow Bazaar in the morning. Tamang’s fan club faxed a letter to Priya Ranjan Das Munshi, Union minister of information and broadcasting, and Union home minister Shivraj Patil.
