Kolkata: Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Friday welcomed the Supreme Court direction to reassign the teacher recruitment case, in which Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay had ordered central agencies to question the leader.
“We welcome the verdict of the SC. Be it the SC or any other court, we have the utmost respect for the judiciary of India.
We have complete trust in the judiciary. Since the matter is sub judice, I would not like to comment on this, although I myself was the petitioner in this case,” Banerjee said.
Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar, however, called the verdict “extremely unfortunate”. “But I feel that the battle against corruption started by Justice Gangopadhyay will not end here. Others will carry it forward,” he said. State leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari said: “He (the judge) deserves a salute.”
Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury said the SC had not made any observation that the probe into recruitment was illegal. “On some procedural matters, the apex court has observed that Justice Gangopadhyay should not have made certain comments to television channels. But this is simply a question of procedure. Justice Gangopadhyay has proved how powerful the chair of a judge is,” he said.
