KOLKATA: Students of

Jadavpur University

and Presidency University were allegedly attacked by Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad supporters when they were distributing leaflets outside

Surendranath College

on Monday afternoon. The leaflets were being distributed to mobilise support for a convention on Friday to protest against the scrapping of the University Grants Commission, allegations of extortion in colleges and universities and vacant seats.

Two students had to be hospitalised with injuries to their faces. Nearly 200 students from different colleges and universities later protested outside Muchipara police station for over two hours and then brought out a rally.

“This was a part of our awareness programme for the convention on Friday to protest against a host of issues. Like minded students from Jadavpur University and Presidency University have been going to several colleges to distribute leaflets about the convention. When we were distributing leaflets outside Surendranath College, some TMCP supporters started abusing us, and then attacked us. Ritam das of JU was hit on the head with a brick while Mainak Maity received injuries on his nose,” said Debraj Koley, a student from JU.

However, a senior Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad leader denied the charges. “No TMCP member was involved in any skirmish,” he said.
