KOLKATA: At least two houses were damaged and a warehouse was gutted completely after a fire broke out in a paint godown on Biplabi Barin Ghosh Sarani on Sunday morning. A woman fell unconscious while a man received burn injuries in the fire, which was brought under control in two hours.
Debashis Saha, who stays on the first floor of a house on one side of the paint factory, said that around 10.40 am, his nine-year-old son had first noticed the fire leaping through the window and damaging the walls of the house.
“My wife was in the kitchen. She ran out from there and saw thick smoke entering the room. The bed inside my son’s room got burnt. Walls of the room cracked and windows got burnt completely,” said Saha. His wife Moumita, who has a cardiac problem, fell unconscious. Locals rushed to the spot and took her out. She recovered after a while. His father also fell ill. “We got saved as we managed to escape through another exit of the room opposite the place where the fire broke out,” Saha said.
Another three-storey building on the other side was damaged too by the fire. Sonali Saha, a homemaker, who stays on the second floor of the house, said that she got alerted about the fire after neighbours raised an alarm. “A teacher, who stays on the first floor of the house, had his scooter parked on the ground floor. He rushed to bring the two-wheeler and got his hands burnt in the fire,” she said.
