Father Carvalho, St Mary’s School founder, dies at 96

Kolkata: The founder of St. Mary's School on Ripon Street, Father Aloysius Patrick Carvalho, breathed his last on Wednesday at 9.15 am at St Xavier's College, Kolkata. He was 96 years old. His funeral mass will be held at 9.30 am on Friday, May 8 at the St Xavier's College Chapel.Father Aloysius Carvalho was the founder, administrator, director and principal of St Mary's School, 92 Ripon Street, Kolkata, and played a central role in its inception in January 1967. He served the institution for approximately 10 years, until 1976, and was remembered by alumni for his strict discipline. Former students wrote on social media paying homage to him, describing him as a very strict disciplinarian. Many recalled him conducting assemblies, maintaining strict routines and dedicating himself to establishing the institution.He made a significant contribution among the Santhals by establishing various centres in Bankura, Mirga and other adjoining areas. He also ventured into remote villages of South 24 Parganas, such as Khari, Baidyapur and Rakshoskhali, for his weekend ministry among Bengali Catholics. Fr Carvalho served as an administrator in various roles, including superior, rector and director.His colleagues described him as a man of strong will who persevered through illness and accidents, earning the nickname "miracle man" from some for repeatedly recovering with renewed energy. Father Dominic Savio, St Xavier's College principal, said, "He was a great inspiration to so many Jesuits due to his extraordinary commitment to the cause of the poor in schools when he was principal and villages when he was working among Santhals. He was a very spiritual man, guided and taught so many people. He will be remembered forever."
