Dramatist Badal Sircar dies at 86

Noted dramatist Badal Sircar passed away at his home on Friday. He was 86. Sircar became popular for his plays 'Ebong Indrajit', 'Basi Khabar' and 'Saari Raat', widely acclaimed in the Seventies.

KOLKATA: Noted dramatist Badal Sircar passed away at his home on Friday. He was 86. Sircar became popular for his plays ‘Ebong Indrajit’, ‘Basi Khabar’ and ‘Saari Raat’, widely acclaimed in the Seventies.
He is well-known for his third theatre. He took his troupe to perform in village courtyards, city streets and pavements.
Sircar’s body was donated to a city hospital on Saturday.

‘‘He was undoubtedly one of our best playwrights ever. You may not agree with his philosophy that theatre needed to be taken out of the auditorium but you must accept that his plays had taken the art of theatre to the next level,’’ said veteran stage actor and director Bibhas Chakraborty.
Several of his plays like ‘Ebong Indrajit’, and ‘Michchil’ have been translated and performed all over India.
