KOLKATA: Kolkata Traffic Police is all set to use its version of 'Yaarana' lights even during the day in monsoon when visibility drops considerably.
The traffic wing is procuring 600 shoulder lights - somewhat light-studded costume that Big B made an instant hit in 'Yaarana'. The red-and-blue lamps will allow motorists view cops even from 200m away. The cops plan to invest Rs 9.3 lakh on the uniform that will function mainly as a warning equipment.
"The older shoulder lights have been damaged. Several have stopped wearing them. But we believe it is a necessary safety tool that will help motorists know of the presence of a cop ahead, especially when it is pouring heavily," said an ACP.
Each uniform will come with a battery capacity of 500mAh (minimum) with a voltage of 5 volt and can be charged in less than an hour. A single charge will allow the cop to use it on duty for around 16 hours.
The cops had bought such body lights for the first time five years back and procured another 240 such uniforms in 2021. Several cops at that time had refused to wear them. This time though, it will be the naka cops who will be specifically asked to wear them.
Kolkata Traffic Police is also sprucing up close to 4,000 portable guardrails that will be easily visible from a distance since they will be repainted with a special paint. "This is part of our endeavour to keep the roads safer since the monsoon sees a rise in accidents due to slippery roads and lesser visibility," said a sergeant.
