KATWA: Three members of a family were killed at a brick kiln in Katwa's Gazipur village on Sunday morning.
Taron Seikh, 60, who had a criminal record, was reportedly a CPM supporter. He apparently left all criminal activities before the assembly elections in May. According to police, however, his gang members joined Trinamool Congress.
Around 10 am on Sunday, when Taron was busy at his paddy field, some people came and asked him to come to a nearby brick kiln.
The moment Taron stepped into the kiln, the gang, around 12-member strong, started hurling bombs and firing at him.
Hearing the gunshots and bombs, Taron's wife Aduri Biwi, 55, and son Saber Seikh, 35, rushed to the kiln. But the criminals did not spare them either. The trio was taken to Katwa subdivisional hospital, but was declared dead.
"We have started investigating the case and it seems that the incident is the fallout of a rift between the gang members. The gang used to extort money from businessmen in Katwa," said Katwa SDPO Jyotirmoy Roy.
CPM zonal secretary Achintya Mallick, admitted that Taron was a party member till the assembly polls and put the blame on Trinamool. "Trinamool is trying to unleash a reign of terror here," he alleged. Katwa MLA and Congress leader Rabindra Nath Chatterjee said the killings were a result of gang rivalry. "
Burdwan police have failed to seize huge quantities of illegal arms and ammunition from trouble-torn areas like Mangalkote and Katwa and I will request chief minister Mamata Banerjee to intervene," he added.
The Trinamool and the Congress have been alleging for long that Burdwan police have not been active like their counterparts in areas like Jhargram, West Midnapore and Hooghly where huge quantities of illegal weapons have been seized since the assembly polls.
On June 2, three persons were killed on Kachari Road in Asansol. Police have failed to arrest the killers till date. Fresh violence had been reported from Mangalkote on Saturday, when anti-social elements allegedly backed by Trinamool fired on police and hurled bombs. The OC of Mangalkote PS, Tirthendu Ganguly, suffered minor injuries.
