Cops urge KMC to repair dug-up roads
Kolkata: Officers from Kolkata Police have requested Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to restore the roads that have been dug up to lay new water and drainage pipelines before schools reopen in the middle of June. Ratha Yatra has also been cited to call for the restoration of a road next to an Iskcon office on Gurusaday Road. Part of JL Nehru Road has also been scraped to level the undulations but this work is expected to be completed in a week. The civic body is also carrying out works in different parts of the city. On SN Banerjee Road, the KMC water supply department is replacing the old water line with a six-inch pipe. This will improve water supply to Taltala and its neighbourhood. At Middleton Street, pipe sewer line strengthening work is underway. The drainage department is also enhancing a line on Gurusaday Road and Ballygunge Circular Road. “This will ensure that waterlogging does not happen in these neighbourhoods,” said an official. The KMC MMiC (roads and engineering), Avijit Mukherjee, said the roads that have been dug up for various utility services will be restored as soon as work is completed. “The dug up stretches on the main roads and thoroughfares will be restored by the department. As for small roads and lanes across the city, restoration work will be carried out by the respective boroughs,” Mukherjee said. Cops are particularly keen that Gurusaday Dutta Road where the Ratha Yatra will take place later this month and a stretch on Russell Street and SN Banerjee Road where schools are located be repaired before the summer vacation.KMC has also been levelling undulated stretches of JL Nehru Road. This work has been completed at Park Street, Theatre Road, Free School Street, Ballygunge Circular Road, Gariahat Road, Syed Amir Ali Avenue and and SN Banerjee Road. At present, the work is on between Esplanade (Dorina Crossing) and northern end of Park Street Flyover on JL Nehru Road as well as Southern Avenue.
