Civic volunteer dies trying to save strays in Behala

A woman named Seema Das died after being hit by a truck on the Biren Roy Road/Ram Road crossing close to a petrol pump located around 300 metres from Shakuntala Park bus stand in Behala. Seema and her husband were travelling to work on a scooter when they were chased by several street dogs. They swerved to avoid hitting them and lost balance, causing Seema to fall and her husband to be injured. A case was registered at the Parnasree PS, but Sarsuna police reached the spot first and sent the victims to the hospital. Witnesses said the truck driver fled the spot.

KOLKATA: A Kolkata Police civic volunteer, Seema Das (42), died on Saturday after being hit by a truck on the Biren Roy Road-Ram Road Crossing, close to a petrol pump located around 300 metres from Shakuntala Park bus stand in Behala. The deceased was travelling to work on a scooter with her husband Tapan Das (42) when they were chased by several street dogs.

The pair swerved to avoid hitting them and lost balance, cops said.
It was around 6.10am that the couple set out for the Medical College police outpost where Seema was posted. “They were on their way towards Behala Chowrasta when they were chased by dogs coming out of Ram Road,” an officer said. Police said the truck’s tyre crushed Seema—a resident of Ketopole-Oxy Town—as soon as she fell on the road. Her husband was injured too but doctors said he is out of danger.A case was registered at the Parnasree PS, however Sarsuna police reached the spot first and sent the victims to the hospital. Witnesses said the truck driver fled the spot. “Maybe one of them was injured by two-wheelers,” said Kaushik Bagh, local resident.
