Jalpaiguri: Union junior home minister Nisith Pramanik announced from a BJP rally in Cooch Behar’s Mathabhanga on Sunday that the Citizenship (Amendment) Act would be implemented across the country, including in Bengal, very soon.
The BJP government would give citizenship to Hindus driven out of neighbouring Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh, he said. “The CAA provides for citizenship. It doesn’t have provisions to take away citizenship,” the BJP leader said ahead of the Bengal rural polls.
Calling Matuas and Rajbanshis the two major “sanatani” communities in Bengal, the minister said the Trinamool government was harassing members of both. “Matua leader Shantanu Thakur is being harassed. The TMC government is also conspiring against Rajbanshi icon Ananta Maharaj and myself,” he said.
TMC’s Cooch Behar unit reacted strongly to Pramanik’s “divisive” comments and held a protest rally at Putimary in Sitai demanding the resignation of Union home minister Amit Shah.
