KOLKATA: The mysterious death of a 22-year-old woman, whose body was recovered from the R G Kar Hospital premises on Sunday midnight, has put the north division police in a fix. The anti-homicide squad of the detective department has been roped in. A murder case, though, will be lodged only after the investigating team ascertains that it’s a case of homicide.
According to DC (north) Bastav Baidya, the only clue the cops have are CCTV footage. “We are taking all steps to try and ascertain her identity. We have forwarded her photograph to all neighbouring police stations. We have also started recording the statements of some witnesses,” said Baidya.
A source in north division said that on paper it seems that the “murder” was not pre-planned. “It was around 12.05 am at night when we found two unidentified men bringing a woman near the emergency ward of the hospital. They left soon after. After a little passage of time, the hospital authorities noticed her lying unconscious. They tried to revive her but she had died sometime ago. Prima facie, the doctors have not found any external injuries on her body. Neither are there any injuries on her private parts suggesting she was not raped. A preliminary report suggests that she was poisoned. We are, however, going for a post mortem after which the exact cause of death can be ascertained,” said a hospital source.
Police said they were probing another fracas at a pub in the BBD Bag area late night though there are no indications so far that the two incidents are related, except the fact that CCTV footage at the pub have picked up a woman “of similar built” loitering there. The fracas had led to detention of two men who were later released by the Hare Street police. Though cops said the fight was restricted between two inebriated men, sources maintained the fracas broke out when bouncers objected to a group of men trying to click photos of a couple of
women present inside the bar.
Recently, another such unclaimed body was recovered from the Kolkata station approach area located close to this hospital. Later, detective department sleuths found that a fracas between some bar employees and a dancer over cash distribution was behind the murder. Cops said these angles will also be probed.
