BHIM transaction volume zooms 289% in Bengal in FY26
Kolkata: BHIM Payments App, developed by NPCI BHIM Services Ltd (NBSL), has witnessed over 289% growth in transaction volume on its platform in Bengal in FY26, and the company's broader business strategy includes reaching out to more feature phone users in the state.During FY26, 71% of transactions on the app in the state were P2M (peer-to-merchant) payments, indicating growing use for routine purchases and bill payments. Groceries accounted for 22.5% of merchant transactions, followed by food outlets and restaurants (18.7%), quick commerce (6.4%), e-commerce (3.9%), and fuel stations (3.4%), according to Lalitha Nataraj, MD and CEO, NBSL.Nataraj said that the company wants to partner with various banks to distribute financial products and embed BHIM technology into bank mobile applications through a white-labelling strategy. "We are working with partners to extend the app's reach to feature phones over the next few months. We are also working with some phone makers to work on how we can make this possible in even feature phones," she said. The BHIM app relaunched last year is available in 15 languages at present. The company has logged growth, with total transaction volumes in the country increasing by 301% as compared with FY25. "In FY26, monthly transaction volumes on the app rose from 5.9 crore in April 2025 to 21.6 crore in March 2026, more than tripling over the course of the financial year. The momentum continued into the new financial year, with transaction volumes at 22.4 crore and transaction value at Rs 26,040 crore in April 2026," she said.On market share, Nataraj said BHIM is looking to double its current share of nearly 1% to 1.5-2% in the near term. Cashback incentives introduced in Jan 2025 have also been a driver for its business growth, she added."We have entered consumer space only recently. We are targeting all segments to grow our business in digital payment. In Bengal, we are seeing this adoption take shape across a wide range of everyday use cases, from groceries and dining to commuting and online purchases," Nataraj said.
