KOLKATA: In a chilling reminder of the Jessica Lall case, a young employee of a central Kolkata bar was shot at for refusing drinks to three youths shortly after midnight on Saturday. Sanjay Paswan, the 26-year-old employee, is now in Medical College Hospital. His attackers fled after dodging policemen manning a police kiosk just 100 yards away. Bower Bar & Restaurant on 20, Ganesh Chandra Avenue had closed as usual at 11:45 pm on Saturday.
Around 12.15 am, three youths arrived on a motorcycle and demanded drinks.
Some of the bar employees, including Sanjay, were standing outside the shuttered gates and told the three to get lost. But, the youths tried to force their way in and a scuffle broke out. Outnumbered, the goons moved away towards a paan shop nearby. Suddenly, one of them turned and opened fire. The bullet struck Sanjay in the left leg. "We thought the fracas was over when they moved away. But a few minutes later we heard a gunshot, and one of our employees screaming for help," said Shantanu Roychowdhury, manager of the bar. "We ran to the spot and saw Sanjay on the ground, bleeding profusely from the left leg." As the bar workers rushed out, the miscreants fled. The policemen manning the kiosk at the crossing of Central Avenue and Ganesh Chandra Avenue were alerted by the gunfire. When the youths spotted them, they again opened fire and fled towards Bentinck Street. Sanjay, who'd been working in the bar for the past six months, is from Jhargram in West Midnapore. Manager Roychowdhury claimed he had never seen the trio before in the bar. DC (Central) Ajey Ranade said: "We've got some concrete leads. We hope to arrest them soon. They are not locals."
