Kolkata: Is it misogyny? Or simple childlike behaviour that prompted Abdur Rezzak Mollah to make sexist comments against actor-turned-politician Roopa Ganguly of the BJP?

Ganguly, who had shot to fame by essaying the role of Draupadi in Mahabharata, was the target of Mollah on Wednesday. The TMC candidate went on a character assassination of the actor in an interview to a private television channel. In the interview, Mollah made sexist comments like 'I know the length of the cigarettes she smokes', 'she really is Draupadi' and 'nobody knows which party will she be in. Once she was a fan of Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee. Today, she is in BJP'.

Needless to say, Mollah didn’t find any support for his misogynist remarks. His controversial remarks even united celebrities across party lines who came forward to criticise Mollah. Many even went to the extent of saying that such remarks from a political leader only smacks of misogyny and is reflective of the way women are objectified in today's Bengal.

As for Ganguly herself, she said: "All I can say is IGNORE. Please write this word in capital letters. If possible, use a bigger font. I don’t have time for him. He is suffering from identity crisis."
