BURDWAN: A 60-year-old man was beaten up by some people at Panjoa village on Monday. Choku Das was trying to help his granddaughter and got beaten up in the process. He was taken to the Katwa SD hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Police have arrested three persons in this connection.
Nandini Das, 7, had gone out to play on Monday evening when she got into a quarrel with her friends.
Soon the parents of the other children arrived and started beating Nandini up. Choku, who tried saving his granddaughter, was allegedly beaten up with bamboo sticks. On seeing Choku slump to the ground the assailants fled. Later, his son Susanta Das took him to the hospital but he died within a few hours.
Susanta lodged an FIR against five persons - Chandana Das, Beno Das, Sukhen Das, Manju Das and Bapi Das - at the Katwa police station10.30 PM. Bapi and Beno are yet to be arrested.
SDPO of Katwa Dhruba Das said that the body had been sent for autopsy and investigations were on. He added that the arrested trio was produced in court on Tuesday.
