’23 ragging accused back at JU Main Hostel, super complains
Kolkata: The superintendent of the A1 and A2 blocks of JU Main Hostel wrote to the university authorities, stating that former students entered the Main Hostel on Tuesday night and, when asked to sign the register at the gate, threatened the guards. The hostel superintendent said among the five former students, one had been accused in the ragging case of the Bengali department fresher in 2023."Around 9 pm on Tuesday, five former students misbehaved with security guards at the gate. Among them, there was one former student of international relations department who was accused in the 2023 ragging case by the university probe panel. When the guards told them to sign the register in order to enter the premises, the accused former student refused to sign. Instead, he threatened the guards, saying ‘this is the gate of the Main Hostel, and not the university'," the superintendent wrote in his letter.
The one accused in the ragging case, who was in second year in 2023, was suspended for a semester and was debarred from the hostel permanently. But he moved court. The issue of former students staying at hostels, mainly at the Main Hostel, came to light after the ragging incident of a fresher in Aug 2023. JU's internal probe panel found out that 28 former students were staying at the hostel during the incident. Six former students were arrested and are in judicial custody, along with six current students. In another letter to the authorities, the superintendent pointed out that two ex-students are residing in the A1 block of the Main Hostel. "They were repeatedly told to leave but refused to vacate," the letter read. A hostel source said, "Though the number of ex-students staying here has come down, it is a persistent problem. Some of them come at night, stay in different rooms, or leave at midnight. Recently, a few students were caught keeping a first-year with them. They apologised later."VC Chiranjib Bhattacharjee acknowledged getting complaints about ex-students staying at the hostel. "Only valid boarders will stay in the hostel. Strict action will be taken against any irregularity. We are asking the anti-ragging squad to look into it. If necessary, the registrar and I will visit the hostel personally. If the situation does not improve even after that, stringent measures will be implemented."
