Kolkata: The family of a 22-year-old youth, who died following a fatal accident, donated his organs and presenting the "gift of life" to three patients. Prasad Kumar Halder's liver and kidneys were transplanted into three patients on Saturday night at two hospitals. This was the city's 14th deceased
organ donation this year.
On finding Hooghly Bhandarhati resident Prasad's condition had led to brain stem death, Apollo Hospital doctors counselled his family, who agreed to donate his organs.
While one of his kidneys was allotted to a patient at RTIICS, the other kidney and his liver were given two patients at Apollo. "We had a matching recipient in a 34-year-old man from Midnapore fighting end-stage renal failure. He is doing well after the transplant," said RTIICS nephrologist Pratik Das. At Apollo the liver recipient (58) and kidney recipient (65) were doing well. —Sumati Yengkhom
