KOLKATA: After nearly 1,200 buses went off the roads on Friday to protest the speed-governor enforcement by the district administration, the state seems to have softened its stand on the issue.
Transport secretary Sumantra Chowdhury said: "We will ask police to withdraw cases against buses for not using speed governor. We still have 45 days before implementing the speed governors.
1x1 polls
A team of officers from the transport department are travelling to Karnataka and Kerala to examine the pros and cons of the system. They will submit a report on the basis of which we will choose the technology. So, right now, police will not book any vehicle for not having speed governors."
District magistrate Sanghamitra Ghosh and additional DM Sreepriya Rangarajan conveyed this to the operators after which Howrah Bus Syndicate leader Mithilesh Mukherjee withdrew the strike. Many buses were booked for not having speed governors and so, operators had called a strike in protest.
