KOLHAPUR: Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) has been imposed in Maharashtra's Sangli district against the backdrop of the violence in some parts of the state during the protest against violence in Tripura.


The prohibitory orders will be in place till November 20.

"The protest rallies held amid Tripura violence turned violent. The anti-social elements may take undue advantage of the tensions and may create law and order issues in the district owing to which Section 144 of the CrPC has been invoked for five days. The gatherings, carrying weapons and creating tensions by disinformation will be punished," said Abhijeet Chaudhary, Sangli collector.

Amrawati, Nanded, Pusad, Malegaon and Karanja towns witnessed violence in last one week.

Before Sangli, section 144 was imposed in several other districts, Pune rural being the recent one.

The district has a history of communal tensions. Miraj city had witnessed riots in 2005. Owing to history, the administration has deployed more security in Sangli and Miraj.

The messages circulated on social media is being closely watched.
