Kolhapur: A shot was fired at a criminal-on-record in Ichalkaranji on Wednesday night, after which the local crime branch (LCB) of the Kolhapur police arrested two men, the police said.
The 22-year-old victim,
Omkar Kamble, from Sangliwadi in Sangli district, has been critically injured and is admitted to the CPR Hospital, Kolhapur. Doctors said his condition is now stable, and he is responding to treatment. The police said the bullet struck his chest (thoracic cage) and caused profuse bleeding.
The police said the shot was fired by two men who chased Kamble from the office of the additional police superintendent, Ichalkaranji, where he had been summoned by the police.
According to the police, Kamble and one of the arrested suspects, Anurag Suryawanshi, had a fight a few months ago. Kamble was arrested and later released on bail. He was called by the police to apprise him of the terms and conditions of the bail at the office of the additional superintendent of police.
The police said Suryawanshi, 20, and Omkar Shende, also 20, both from Ichalkaranji, kept an eye on Kamble's movements.
When Kamble left for his home in Sangli, the two chased him on a motorcycle. Along the Ichalkaranji-Sangli road at Mahasatta Chowk, Suryawanshi aimed the firearm from the front side and fired the shot. The two then fled the scene.
Inspector Sushant Chavan, of LCB, said he learnt about the whereabouts of both men and that they were hiding in the Nadives Naka area. The police arrested them after laying a trap. "The motive of firing the shot is not yet clear," said Chavan.
