BJP’s attempt to attack democracy foiled: Congress secretary Sachin Sawant
Kolhapur: Sachin Sawant, the national secretary of Congress, on Saturday alleged that BJP is using the Women's Reservation Bill to attack the Constitution and Indian democracy, and said a new bill is being introduced despite the earlier bill, passed in 2023 still not being implemented.Addressing the media at the District Congress Committee office in Kolhapur, alongside MLC Satej Patil, Sawant said, "BJP's attempt to launch an attack on Indian democracy under the guise of the ‘Nari Shakti' (women's empowerment) bill has proven futile." He alleged that the Women's Reservation Bill is being used as a pretext to strike at the framework of the Constitution.

Sawant said, "The ruling dispensation tabled the Women's Bill in the country's highest legislative body. However, the Modi govt suffered a public embarrassment after the bill was rejected following the vote count. While the bill passed in 2023 has yet to be implemented, a fresh attempt is now being made, by introducing a new bill, to undermine both the Constitution and democracy."He also took a jibe at chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, saying, "Just like PM Modi speaks falsely, you (Fadnavis) should not resort to falsehoods and lower the dignity of Maharashtra's culture."
Speaking about the Ashok Kharat case, Sawant said, "The Kharat scandal has brought shame upon Maharashtra. This is not merely a case of financial corruption; it is a case of corruption and immorality perpetrated in the name of religion. The death of Kharat's associate in an accident on Friday appears suspicious."He alleged that the IT firm controversy is being highlighted as a diversion to draw away attention away from the Ashok Kharat scandal.Sawant said action must be taken against the guilty, but alleged that a campaign was being waged to defame all corporate entities under the pretext of corporate misconduct. He asserted that the current govt had proven to be a complete failure.
