KOLHAPUR: The

Kolhapur

Municipal Transport (

KMT

) will cut down on the trips of its buses to avoid losses reported the during 10-day Ganesh festival.

The festival will start from Monday and the transport utility will keep many of its buses off the road till September 12 — last day of the festival.

Besides cutting the trips, the KMT has also changed the routes of some of the buses to avoid congestion caused due to visitors arriving at pandals to see the decoration.

According to the KMT administration, around 40 of the 110 buses will

remain off road

and trips along 60 routes will be changed. The KMT buses will take long routes mainly along the ring road to reach distant locations such as Kagal, Morewadi and suburbs.

Sanjay Bhosale, KMT additional manager, said, “Many buses have to run without passengers during the festival period and revenue loss is reported owing to decline in passenger count. We have ensured that regular passengers do not face inconvenience and for them the buses will continue to ply on alternate routes.”

Decorations of pandals open for visitors after immersion of house-hold Ganesh idols on the fifth day. Till then there is less congestion at major centres such as Shivaji Chowk. Such centres are important for boarding of passengers and the KMT will continue to provide the transport service from such centres till the fifth day of the festival.

“However, rush is observed on the last five days during which the buses will run along the alternate routes. We appeal to the passengers that there can be last-minute changes in transport service schedule owing to the conditions during that particular day. Hence, passengers are requested co-operate with us,” Bhosale said.
