Unidentified man attacks girl inside IIT-Palakkad
Palakkad/Coimbatore: A final-year BTech student of IIT-Palakkad sustained a head injury after being allegedly attacked by an unidentified person inside the campus on Monday night.According to the IIT authorities, the incident occurred around 7pm on Monday when a group of students were walking from the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam block of the institute to the Kedaram Mess block. The student, who was walking behind, was allegedly attacked by an unknown individual, resulting in an injury to her forehead.
The institute's medical officer reached the spot immediately and administered first aid before she was shifted to a private hospital. A CT scan revealed a head injury, following which she was referred to a private medical college in Coimbatore. She underwent a surgery on the right side of her forehead on Tuesday and is recuperating in the general ward at a private medical college hospital at SITRA on Avinashi Road in Coimbatore. The institute authorities informed that her condition is stable. Her parents are with her.Meanwhile, a team from Kasaba police station visited the student at the hospital and recorded her detailed statement. According to an official source, the girl told investigators that she had seen a person clad in a blue shirt. Though CCTV cameras are installed in many parts of the campus, there were none on the stretch where the attack occurred. Police suspect the involvement of someone from inside the campus.Kasaba police station house officer and his team inspected the scene and interacted with students, after which an FIR was registered. Following the incident, the institute authorities convened a high-level meeting to discuss strengthening security inside campus, including installing additional CCTV cameras and enhancing patrols. Students have been advised to use campus bus and buggy services for internal travel. The IIT-Palakkad director in his address to students promised that all necessary steps would be taken to prevent recurrence of such incidents.
