TRIPUNITHURA: A couple was killed after a speeding truck rammed their two-wheeler at Kadungamamgalam near Thiruvankulam on Monday.
The deceased were identified as
Ratheesh
(40)and his wife Raji (38), residents of Meenaara near Poothrukka. They leave behind two minor daughters -- Rakhi Mol, a student of
Kolenchery
Vocational Higher Secondary school and Rajeesha Mol, a standard IX student of Poothrukka Government school.
The accident happened at around 3.45 pm. Both the truck and the two-wheeler were heading to Thiruvankulam. The truck lost its balance and knocked down the two-wheeler. The couple were caught under the wheels of the moving truck and dragged for about 20m. The speeding truck also hit a parked car and a two-wheeler. The car landed on the other side of the road and the two-wheeler was crushed. According to eye witnesses the truck collided with the two-wheeler in which the couple were travelling when it tried to take a left turn.
The truck stopped only after it crashed into a supermarket. Benoy (52), the supermarket owner, sustained injuries. He was admitted to a private hospital in Tripunithura. Hill Palace police arrested the driver Rajan on charges of negligible driving. MVD officials said that there were no mechanical defects. “It is a clear case of reckless driving and stringent action will be taken against those concerned,” said MVD official Lijo Peter.
