Transport department approves 27 new routes in Ernakulam to improve last mile connectivity
Kochi: Transport department has given final approval to the proposal submitted by transport commissioner on the introduction of 503 new routes across the state under Kerala Public Transport Urban-Rural Integration and Last-Mile Connectivity Scheme – 2026. Among them, 27 routes have been identified to connect the burgeoning IT hubs, industrial clusters and rural hinterlands within Ernakulam.The notification published on Monday marks a departure from traditional main-road services, prioritizing mini-buses and high-frequency shuttles to ensure last mile connectivity and enhance public transportation to suburb regions.

"State govt, having considered the objectives received against the draft scheme and after having heard the objections and considering the report of transport commissioner thereon, are satisfied that it is necessary to formulate new routes across the state with a view to enhance public transport accessibility to all areas. Therefore, in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (3) of Section 67 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, govt of Kerala hereby approve the proposal regarding the scheme," the notification stated.Major advantage of the route expansion is the connectivity to Kakkanad. As Kochi Metro Pink Line is expected to be completed in Dec 2026, the road network is being synchronized to act as a feeder system. New routes like Kakkanad – Pallikara (18km) and Kakkanad circular (13.9km) covering CSEZ, Infopark and Edachira are designed for IT workforce, offering a reliable alternative to private cars.
The other new routes include Perumbavoor – Kakkanad (31km) via Pattimattom and multiple services connecting NH 66."The aim is to ensure adequate, efficient and economical stage carriage services in the state by promoting last-mile connectivity in both urban and rural areas, enhancing rural transport, reducing traffic congestion, increasing accessibility and mobility for people and optimizing the use of public transport infrastructure," the order read.While regional transport authority concerned is authorized to issue and renew the licence under the scheme, there are strict conditions and vehicle specifications for issuing the license — the applicant shall produce a new stage carrier registered in Kerala, the vehicle shall be installed with devices of speed limiting, GPS and digital time-punching facilities. The vehicle shall be fitted with a minimum of five CCTV cameras.
