Kochi Metro’s landmark decision to employ
transgenders
may have garnered instant international attention, but closer home, social stigma continues to be the biggest barrier between them and these opportunities that could help them become part of the mainstream society.
Nine of the 21 transgenders who were given jobs by
Kochi Metro Rail Ltd
(KMRL) in its ticketing and housekeeping departments have not reported for duty since the Metro began commercial operations on June 19. The main cause of their truancy seems to be their inability to find cheap and safe accommodation in the city.
“It is difficult for us to get an apartment on rent on our own. We don’t have money to make advance payments. Either KMRL or some other government agencies should step in and negotiate for us,” Raga Ranjini, a transgender, said.
Transgenders working in ticketing operations get Rs 10,400 per month (after deductions), while the housekeeping staff are paid Rs 9,000. Currently, many pay Rs 600 per day for lodging.
Sahaja Social Welfare and Charitable Society (SSWCS), which provides short stay and shelter facilities to transgenders, said those who need accommodation could approach them.
“Two persons employed with Kochi Metro are already with Sahaja. We are willing to take in more,” said SSWCS secretary Vijayaraja Mallika. However, not many are willing to opt for this facility, apparently because of their reluctance to adhere to strict hostel discipline.
