SHRC orders probe into pvt bus speeding
Kochi: The state human rights commission (SHRC) has ordered a probe into the complaint that private bus employees were driving at an uncontrolled speed by disabling the speed governor system, endangering public safety.The commission directed the Ernakulam district police chief (city) and the RTO to submit a probe report within three weeks. The complaint stated that the speed governor system of the bus that hit nine-year-old Enoy Jude in Chellanam was tampered with. The boy, a Class III student, was run over by a private bus that lost control while manoeuvring at high speed. The bus crashed into an electric pole, running over the boy, who was walking along the roadside.

The complaint stated that the busw as travelling at a speed of 100kmph due to the absence of a speed governor. Edakochi native Lawrence Varghese and Elamakkara Jose Dominic were also victims of speeding. The complaint filed by activist Thambi Subramanian stated that it became a custom to deactivate speed governors in private buses once their vehicle tests were completed.TNN
