Saji Cherian says govt stands with survivor in director Ranjith case
Kottayam: Minister Saji Cherian on Wednesday said that govt stands with the survivor who raised sexual assault allegations against director Ranjith. He added that govt will take action regardless of the individual's status. He noted that the recurrence of such incidents is serious. Ranjith has not been protected. The arrest was made because the complaint had substance, he said. The next govt will soon legislate to ensure women's safety, he added. On Ranjith earlier serving as Kerala Chalachitra Academy chairman, Cheiran said that while considering someone for a position, their professional excellence is the primary focus. Mistakes should not be attributed to the entire institution, he added. Cherian said that a prompt stance was taken as soon as the complaint was filed. The continuous occurrence of such incidents is very unfortunate. After the film conclave, such offences had decreased. Those who have had bad experiences should come forward and speak. Efforts should not be made to withdraw the complaint and evade the issue. It should be faced courageously. Complaints should not be made to target someone personally. If the complaint is found to have merit, strong action will be taken. Three police officers have been specially appointed for this purpose, Cherian added.
