TRIPUNITHURA: Oliver, a well-trained sniffer dog serving with the Hill Palace police squad, died in a road accident near Seaport-Airport Road on Saturday night.

Oliver was inducted into the Hill Palace police squad after completing its training at the Thrissur Police Academy. The canine had been undergoing special training at the armed reserve camp in finding explosives and the presence of bombs.

Oliver, belonging to the Belgian Malinois breed, was one year old. It had suffered some fractures in the accident and was admitted to Pelican Pet Care Hospital in Eroor, where it breathed its last. The inquest was held at the hospital and the postmortem was conducted at the district veterinary hospital.

An officer from the Hill Palace police said that as per tradition, Oliver was given the proper police guard of honour during the funeral held at the AR camp.

District headquarters (DHQ) commandant K Suresh, state-level charge 9 officer S Suresh, veterinary surgeon B S Suman and others were present at the funeral.
