Kottayam: Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church head Baselios Marthoma Mathews III said that the state govt should explore other revenue sources instead of depending on income from liquor.
The Catholicos was speaking at a meeting with the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council (KCBC) Temperance Commission's clergy and state officials, who visited him at the Church's headquarters in Kottayam on Saturday to discuss the state govt's controversial liquor policy.

"The govt's alcohol policy poses a significant threat to society. Not only Christians but people of all religions should raise their voices against it. Increased availability of alcohol leads to more violence and injustice. The govt is using the revenue from alcohol, which amounts to an additional Rs 1850 crore, for unnecessary gatherings to boost their image. This is not the right way to generate govt revenue. To prevent officials from questioning this, the govt is increasing their work allowances. The extension of bar operating hours is also viewed with concern," the Catholicos said.
Church leaders decided to submit a petition to the govt, demanding a revision of policies such as the extension of bar hours, the increase in the number of liquor outlets, and the opening of Bevco outlets at Metro stations. Letters will also be sent to political fronts urging them to take a stand on alcohol and drug policies. A leadership meeting to bring together like-minded communities was also decided during the meeting with the Catholicos.
