Noted Malayalam actor-director Sreenivasan passes away at 69 in Kochi
KOCHI: Veteran Malayalam actor and director Sreenivasan passed away at a private hospital near Kochi on Saturday morning, film industry sources said. He was 69.
He was admitted to a hospital in Tripunithura on Friday night and died on Saturday morning.
A native of Kannur, Sreenivasan had been living in Kochi for the last several years.
Besides acting, he worked as a director, screenwriter, dubbing artist and producer. He appeared in more than 200 films and made his acting debut in Manimuzhakkam in 1976.
His sons, Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan, are also actors in the Malayalam film industry.
Condolences poured in from across the state following the news of his death. Minister for General Education and Labour V Sivankutty described Sreenivasan’s demise as one of the biggest losses to Malayalam cinema. “The ‘Sri’ of Malayalam cinema fades away; heartfelt tributes to beloved Sreenivasan. The demise of beloved Sreenivasan is one of the greatest losses Malayalam cinema has ever suffered,” the minister said in a post on X.
Sivankutty said that while there were criticisms at times, it was doubtful whether Malayalam cinema had seen another artist who portrayed the lives and struggles of ordinary people with such authenticity, often blending them with subtle humour. He also expressed condolences to the actor’s family, friends and colleagues, and said he shared their grief in this moment of irreparable loss.
