IDUKKI: Hoteliers and resort owners in Munnar, the state’s most-visited hilly tourist spot, often rue the lack of proper means of entertainment for tourists after nightfall.

With the aim to make the night activities in Munnar more livelier than usual, musicians and music lovers in the area have formed Music Lovers’ Forum for conducting music nights on the streets during weekends in which both natives and tourists can take part.

The forum has set the tone for the event by already carrying out as many as three night-music concerts on the streets in Munnar.

“We are planning to conduct music events at night on Kargil Road in Munnar Town and Old Munnar area every weekend. Western music will be played in the event now and instrumental music and folklore will also be arranged in the future,” musician and Munnar grama panchayat vice-president M Rajendran said.

Kargil Road, where only pedestrians are allowed, would be an ideal location for this concept of music night on streets, he added. Initially, the expense for the sound system will be borne by the forum and the organizers want district tourism promotion council to take over the event in the due course.

“The concept of musical nights is an attempt to explore the possibilities of improving night tourism in Munnar where tourists retire to their rooms by evening. We have given several proposals to the tourism department in this regard,” hotelier and resort owner Anish P Varghese said.
