MGU BTech students to meet guv

Kottayam: BTech students of MG University, whose issued degree certificates were cancelled following the mark donation row, will meet governor Arif Mohammed Khan to represent their side.
The governor’s office had directed the vice-chancellor to issue directions to all students who benefitted by the moderation to offer their objections/explanations against the syndicate’s decision to withdraw the moderation awarded, if they wish, directly to the governor’s office within 15 days of receiving the notice.
The office also directed the VC to treat this matter as most urgent.
Based on this direction, the varisity’s controller of examinations (COE) had sent out a letter on December 20 to all 118 candidates to meet the governor within 15 days to apprise him of their complaints and suggestions.
The varsity had issued degree certificates to 118 students based on the syndicate’s decision made on April 30, 2019, to grant a maximum of five grace marks to BTech students who failed in only one subject.
This decision was revoked by the syndicate on October 24 after it was found that the syndicate did not have the authority for moderation. The degree certificates issued too were cancelled through a notification on November 29.
Controversial decisions one after the other by the MG University syndicate have put the future of the 118 candidates in crisis.
The syndicate’s decision to grant five grace marks was found to be made out of the way, and the involvement of the private secretary of the higher education minister K T Jaleel was alleged in the matter.
Later, the decision of the syndicate to revoke its earlier decision of granting grace marks was found illegal as the university was clearly was of the opinion that such a procedure can only be approved after ratification by the chancellor.
