Marital discords leave one dead, another injured

Marital discord

lead to a man killing his wife’s relative and another man attempting to murder his spouse in two separate incidents in the district.

where autorickshaw driver E M Ashraf (37) stabbed his wife’s cousin P M Shaji (49) who tried to sort out the differences between the couple. Ashraf suspected that his wife had extramarital affair and this led to frequent conflicts between the couple, who had been married for 13 years and had two children.

The differences between Ashraf and his wife started five months ago and the accused harassed his wife, police said. As differences increased between the couple, family members from both sides got together on Sunday evening at Ashraf’s sister’s place in Arakkapady to sort out the differences, police said.

“The accused also alleged that his wife had an extramarital affair. This upset his wife’s relatives and led to heated arguments. When Shaji defended the woman, the accused took out a knife and stabbed him. Ashraf then fled the scene,” police said.

Though Shaji was taken to Kolencherry Medical College hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Ashraf too sustained injuries in the fight.

In the attempt-to-murder case in Cheranelloor, Santosh was upset that his wife, with whom he had a love marriage two years ago without family’s consent, had filed for divorce. The victim’s husband, Santhosh (35), and his friends Nizam (25) and Ranjith (35) were arrested on Monday over the stabbing of the woman on November 30.

Police said accused Santhosh with help from his friends, Nizam and Ranjith, stabbed his wife in the parking area of a private hospital where she was working. Santhosh was upset that his wife was refusing to meet him after filing the divorce petition, police said. “Santhosh and his friends abducted a friend of the victim from Edappally. They then called the victim demanding that she should meet Santhosh if she wanted to ensure her friend’s safety. The victim came to the parking lot and there was a heated argument, following which Santhosh stabbed the victim and fled the scene,” police said. The victim was admitted to hospital, where she had to undergo a surgery .
