Mar Baselios Mar Gregorios Orthodox Church hosts iftar gathering
Kottayam: Mar Baselios Mar Gregorios Orthodox Church, a parish of Malankara Orthodox Church, located in Thazhathangady in Kottayam, on Thursday hosted an iftar gathering at the church premises, bringing together members of Christian and Muslim communities. The event saw dignitaries and community leaders come together to share a meal and strengthen bonds.The event saw the presence of guests, including N K Shefeek Mannani, chief imam of Juma Masjid, Muhammad Salman Mallahari, chief imam of Mujahideen Juma Masjid and C J Punnoose cor-episcopa, among others. "This event was a beautiful demonstration of our shared values and commitment to peace and harmony," said father P A Philip, vicar of the church, who also heads the ministry of human empowerment of the Orthodox Church. "Thazhathangady is a place known for upholding secular values, and people of all religions coexist happily here," he said. Three mosques, including Thazhathangady Juma Masjid, one of the oldest mosques in the country, surround the church. "In a 500m radius from the church, there are three mosques," he said. "We look forward to continuing this dialogue and building stronger relationships with our Muslim friends and neighbours," he added.
Malankara Orthodox Church, believed to be founded by St Thomas the Apostle in 52 AD, has a rich legacy in India, with a vibrant presence in Kerala. The church has been contributing significantly to the cultural and spiritual heritage of the region. Church, located on the banks of Meenachil River, is a shining example of peaceful coexistence. This initiative aimed to revive and celebrate this spirit of harmony.
