Kochi: In a major drug bust in Angamaly, a man was caught with more than 62kg of ganja on Tuesday. The accused Haneef, 38, from Uliyathadukka, Kasaragod, was intercepted by police while transporting the ganja in a car.
The accused was apprehended by Ernakulam rural district Dansaf team and Angamaly police. The operation was based on a tip-off received by district police chief K S Sudarshan. Ganja was being transported from Odisha to Kottayam. The car was intercepted at Angamaly TB Junction, police said.
According to police, ganja was hidden in a special compartment behind the car's rear seat. Haneef purchased drugs from a local trafficking group. To avoid detection, the journey was made through less-travelled routes, police said.
Police have initiated a probe to identify if more persons are part of the racket. Rural police said that this was the largest seizure of ganja in the rural district this year. The investigation team included narcotic cell DSP J Umesh Kumar, Aluva DYSP Babukutty, Angamaly SIs M K Shyam, Lancy Das, K P Viju, M S Vijish, ASI T R Rajeev and senior CPO Jibin Krishna.
