Inauguration of IUML’s houses for survivors today

Kozhikode: The formal house-warming ceremonies of the 51 houses handed over by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) to families affected by the Mundakkai-Chooralmala landslides will be held on Monday.State leadership of IUML, including state president Panakkad Syed Sadiqali Shihab Thangal, will attend the ceremonies. The beneficiary families have started moving into the houses and they will begin living there from Monday.Muslim League handed over the keys and documents of the houses to the selected beneficiaries at the project site in Thrikkaippatta in Wayanad on Feb 28.Of the 51 houses completed in the first phase, 14 have been allotted to Hindu families, who were given priority without a draw of lots. The decision was taken to accommodate the applicants from the community in the first phase of the project itself. The remaining 37 beneficiaries, all from the Muslim community, were selected through a draw.The houses provided for the Mundakkai-Chooralmala disaster survivors measure 1,060sq ft, with three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen, work area, sit-out, living and dining areas. The houses have been furnished with beds, sofas, dining tables, chairs and clocks, as well as other appliances.The houses have a paved courtyard and a 7m-wide brick-paved road in front. A well and a large tank have been installed to provide clean water to the homes. The construction has been completed with a foundation that allows for vertical expansion, if needed.
